President Obama Becomes the First American President to Back Same-Sex Marriage

“I’ve just concluded, for me, personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama said in an interview with ABC News.
Obama, who had previously backed strong protections for gay and lesbian couples, said his position had evolved partly after talking to his two daughters Malia and Sasha who had some friends who had same-sex parents.
“It wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective,” Obama said in the interview.

Every hour of TV watching shortens life by 22 minutes

We all knew that to much tv wasn’t good for you but did you know this? Researchers at the University of Queensland, Australia, claim that watching TV could shorten your lifetime.

In their paper, published in The British Journal of Sports Medicine, they write that “TV viewing time may have adverse health consequences that rival those of lack of physical activity, obesity and smoking; every single hour of TV viewed may shorten life by as much as 22 minutes.”

This conclusion is based on a survey of 11,000 Australians, which compared the life expectancies of TV-watching adults to the numbers for those who don’t watch and found that the top 1% of TV watchers will live 4.8 years less than the non-viewers.

Of course, it’s not the TV itself that’s causing health problems, it’s the sedentary activity. That includes sitting in cars and … playing video games.

Uh oh.

Police: Japanese student presumed dead after fall into Niagara Falls

This must be a terrible ordeal for her family, its really tragic and my thoughts go out to them.

19-year-old Japanese student is presumed dead after she lost her balance Sunday and fell into the churning waters of Niagara Falls, police said Tuesday.

The student, whose name was being withheld pending notification of her family, was straddling the railing with an umbrella in her hand and fell above the brink of the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side of Niagara, according to a news release from the Niagara Parks Police.

“This is the first accident of its kind I can recall in my 35 years of policing,” Niagara Parks Police Chief Doug Kane said Tuesday.

A search turned up no sign of the student, but on Monday searchers in a helicopter from the Erie County, New York, sheriff’s department spotted the body of a male in the falls’ turbulent whirlpool, police said.

The body was recovered by the Niagara Parks Police Service with the assistance of the Whirlpool Jet Boat Company and does not appear to be related to any previously reported incidents, according to the news release from the parks police.

Kane said Tuesday that the male body had not been identified.

After the student disappeared on Sunday, members of the parks police, Niagara Regional Police, Niagara Falls Fire Department, New York State Parks Police and the Erie County sheriff’s helicopter unit began to look for the woman.

The student’s fall was caught on surveillance video but police have not released the tape. “It appears from the review of surveillance video that this incident was a tragic accident,” the parks police said in their news release.

“It is now a recovery issue,” Kane said Tuesday. “She is officially listed as a missing person until an actual body is confirmed.”

Teenager charged with riot murder

It’s a real let down when you hear about things like this, a teenager and others out there in the riot causing deaths.

The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Croydon Magistrates Court alongside his mother, who has been charged with perverting the course of justice.

Richard Mannington Bowes died after being attacked on Monday August 8 when he was attempting to extinguish a fire started by rioters rampaging near his home in Ealing, West London.

The 68-year-old was surrounded by a gang of youths, some of whom were wearing hoods.

According to the prosecution the 16-year-old punched Mr Bowes in the face, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the road.

The youth, who was wearing a navy T-shirt and black trousers sat impassively in the dock with his arms folded as the particulars of the case were read out.

John Gardner, prosecuting, told the court that on the evening of Monday August 8, Mr Bowes, who lived alone in Ealing, was seen walking from his home to the shopping area, where widespread disturbances had broken out.

Mr Gardner went on: “Fires had been lit and missiles were being thrown. It was about 10.30pm Mr Bowes was spotted going over to a bin that had been set alight.

“He was seen trying to extinguish the fire in the bin when he was challenged by a number of people. It is at this point he is punched in the face and falls backwards striking his head on the road surface.”

Among the distinctive clothing the attacker was alleged to be wearing was a light coloured sweatshirt emblazoned with the logo ‘Robbers and Villains’.

Mr Gardner said the police had examined a large amount of CCTV footage.

Police arrested the youth at his home in Hounslow, West London and he was subsequently charged with murder, violent disorder and four counts of burglary.

The court heard that the youth allegedly stole items from a branch of Tesco Express, William Hill bookmakers and a Thai restaurant called Fat Boys.

District Judge Robert Hunter ordered that the youth be remanded in secure accommodation until his next appearance at the Old Bailey on August 18.

The court heard that the youth’s mother had also been arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

She was also refused bail and will appear alongside her son at the Old Bailey.

Last night the sister of Mr Bowes paid tribute to him praising his civic pride.

Anne Wilderspin, 73, who lives in Matlock, Derbyshire said: “It doesn’t surprise us that he was trying to put out fires. He wouldn’t have thought about whether there was any danger involved. He would just do it because he had pride in his community.”

Mr Bowes never regained consciousness and died in hospital on August 11.

World Mexico Arrests Trafficker Accused of 600 Killings

These guys should be ashamed of themselves, hopefully they live a long life behind bars. Nobody should get away with that many killings at all. exican police arrested the suspected leader of a brutal drug gang called “The Hand with Eyes” and he has confessed to helping carry out or ordering more than 600 murders, authorities said Thursday.

Oscar Osvaldo Garcia Montoya, 36, was arrested in an overnight raid on a presumed safe house on the outskirts of Mexico City, State of Mexico Attorney General Alfredo Castillo said at a news conference.

“The Hand with Eyes” is one of the groups blamed for bringing the drug violence typical of northern Mexico to Mexico City and its surrounding areas.

The organization is known for extreme violence, including decapitations. Many of its victims have been drug dealers and rivals killed as the group fought for control of drug sales in Mexico state, an area that includes many of the poor suburbs ringing the capital.

Castillo said Garcia is a deserter from the Mexican marines who worked as a bodyguard for major cartel figures including Edgar Valdez, aka “La Barbie,” a top assassin for the Beltran Leyva cartel until he was arrested in 2010.

With the capture or death of Valdez and most of the leaders of the Beltran Leyva cartel, Garcia split off and formed his own group.

Garcia is known as “El Compayito” after a popular Mexican hand-puppet character created by an entertainer who dresses up his hand and puts eyes on it. The crime gang apparently took its name from the puppet’s nickname.

“In the first declarations that have been gathered, El Compayito and-or ‘The Hand with Eyes,’ has acknowledged having participated personally in 300 murders and ordering another 300,” Castillo said.

The bushy-haired Garcia gazed coolly when he was paraded before journalists Thursday, held firmly by two masked police officers.

Castillo said Garcia had received some training from members of the Guatemalan special forces called the “Kaibiles,” who are known for massacres during the Guatemalan civil war that ended in the 1990s. Some of them are believed to have been hired by Mexican drug cartels.

Ashton Kutcher Replaces Sheen as Highest-Paid Actor on TV

It looks like Ashton hasn’t only replaced sheen as the leading role but is now the highest payed actor on television. Ashton Kutcher has replaced Charlie Sheen as the highest-paid actor on television, bringing in $700,000 per episode of “Two and a Half Men,” reports TV Guide Magazine.

In its annual “Who Earns What” issue, the magazine says that Kutcher’s salary — which equates to $16.8 million for a standard 24-episode order — is actually $500,000 less per episode than what Sheen made last season, before departing in ignominy earlier this year. (Sheen has said his full payment per episode was closer to $2 million, presumably including syndication royalties and other payouts.)
Other surprises from the issue:
Ted Danson will receive $225,000 for each episode of “CSI,” which is $125,000 less than what Laurence Fishburne made. But it’s on par with other established stars, as both Kiefer Sutherland and Tim Allen will make $225,000 for their respective shows, “Touch” and “Last Man Standing.”
Both Scott Pelley and Piers Morgan receive less than a third of what their predecessors Katie Couric and Larry King made, and Regis Philbin left “Live! With Regis and Kelly” rather than accept a cut from his $15 million annual salary.
Anderson Cooper will make around $11 million this year combined with his CNN salary and his syndication haul.

Memphis school principal found dead in classroom; student held

This is very tragic, and to think a student caused this makes it even more horrible than it already is. This kid must of hated school so much to go to the lengths that he did. He’s a cruel teenager and deserves years of punishment for his terrible crime.

The principal of a small private school in Memphis, Tennessee, was found dead in a classroom Wednesday, Memphis police said.

Suzette York, 49, was lying in a pool of blood at Memphis Junior Academy, according to the city fire department.

Police have detained a 17-year-old student in connection with the death, which has been deemed a homicide, police said. No charges had been filed Wednesday evening.

“It’s tragic all the way around,” Mayor A.C. Wharton Jr. said outside the school.

The school is affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church, officials said.

York, who had been the principal of the school since 2008, has a family in Memphis, said Marvin Lowman, communications director for the Seventh-day Adventist Conference in Goodlettsville, Tennessee.

Officers responded to a call at 11:15 a.m.

“Upon arrival on the scene, officers located a deceased female inside of a classroom. The circumstances leading up to this incident are unknown at this time,” Sgt. Alyssa Macon-Moore, a police spokeswoman, told reporters outside the school.

A prayer vigil was held later Wednesday.

Former student Kristen Bridges said York was an exemplary biology and math teacher.

“Past the teaching, she loved God,” Bridges told CNN affiliate WREG. “And she showed that in everything she did.”

China launches first aircraft carrier on maiden sea

China seems to be the place for inventions these days and they did it again with the first aircraft carrier that can travel out on the sea. China’s first aircraft carrier held its sea trial Wednesday, a step likely to stoke patriotic pride at home and jitters abroad about Beijing’s naval ambitions.

The long-awaited debut of the vessel, refitted from a former Soviet craft, marked a step forward in China’s long-term plan to build a carrier force that can project power into the Asian region, where seas are spanned by busy shipping lanes and thorny territorial disputes.

“Its symbolic significance outweighs its practical significance,” said Ni Lexiong, an expert on Chinese maritime policy at the Shanghai University of Political Science and Law.

“We’re already a maritime power, and so we need an appropriate force, whether that’s aircraft carriers or battleships, just like the United States or the British empire did,” he said in a telephone interview.

The carrier “left its shipyard in Dalian Port in northeast Liaoning province Wednesday morning to start its first sea trial,” said the official Xinhua news agency, describing the trip as only a tentative trial run for the unfinished ship.

“Military sources said that the first sea trial was in line with the schedule of the carrier refitting project and would not take a long time,” the agency said.

The aircraft carrier, which is about 300 meters (984 feet) long, plowed through fog and sounded its horn three times as it left the dock, Xinhua said on its military news microblog.

In an interview published this week, Chinese navy Rear Admiral Yin Zhuo said his country intended to build an air carrier group, but the task would be long and difficult.

“The aircraft carriers will form a very strong battle group,” Yin told the China Economic Weekly. “But the construction and functional demands of an aircraft carrier are extremely complex,” he told the magazine.

Training crew and, eventually, pilots for the carriers was a big challenge, said Yin.

Many feared dead as Russian plane crashes in East Siberia

We seem to be living in a world where so much is going on and this only adds to it unfortunately. It’s devastating to hear about incident’s like this. A cargo plane crashed in the Russia’s East Siberia, apparently killing all eleven people on board, Russian transport officials reported Tuesday.

The Antonov-12 plane carrying nine crew members and two passengers as well as 16 tons of food was en route Tuesday from the Far East city of Magadan northwards to the Chukotka peninsula when it disappeared from radars some 300 kilometers, or 190 miles, from its take-off point, the Russian Far East Transport Prosecutor’s Office said on its website.

The pilots reported a fuel leak and an engine fire to air traffic controllers but didn’t manage to return to the departure airport for an emergency landing and lost communication, the office said.

State-run RIA-Novosti newswire cited witnesses who said they had seen the plane falling to the ground near the village of Omsukchan in the Magadan region.

The Emergency Situations Ministry told Russian state TV that dozens of rescue workers were dispatched to the accident area but the search operation is hindered by thick fog and nighttime. The ministry wouldn’t report the fatalities until the bodies are officially discovered.

But Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed the fact of the crash in a press statement, and said it opened a criminal probe on charges of violation of air safety rules but nobody has been brought responsible for the crash yet. A group of experienced investigators and forensic experts were sent from Moscow, the committee said.
